Plan & Adding Sounds.

Plan.

My plan for this is pretty basic really, I went out with a group of classmates and some recording hardware: Microphone, Recorder and Headphones. We recorded all sorts of things from kicking a bin to clicking a mouse or tapping a keyboard. We struggled recording the stuff as we had the recorder set up on the wrong volume setting, we asked for some help from a teacher and got it fixed. We then learnt that the volume was set too low and wasn't pick up most of the sound. We got this fixed after some troubleshooting and had to go and rerecord some things.

Mood.

The mood I'm going for in my game is a atmospheric space theme, as the game is 'Space Invaders' I want it to be tech sounding with some added filters. I think I have achieved this with the sounds I have added and made sure they sound Sci-Fi. The filters I added also made it sounds futuristic such as adding a echo filter so it sounds like something from Space.

Adding Sounds.

This is my explanation and Plan for adding sounds to my game: 'Space Invaders'.

To start with I had to make the sound, I achieved this by going around the college with a group and some recording software: Microphone, Recorder and Headphones. We recorded all sorts of things from kicking a bin to clicking a mouse and tapping a keyboard. We struggled recording the stuff as we had the recorder set up on the wrong setting, we asked for help from a teacher and got it fixed. We then learnt that the volume was set too low and wasn't picking up much of the sounds. We eventually got this fixed after some troubleshooting and had to go and rerecord a lot of things we had done.

Next, we came back to the classroom and opened Adobe Audition which is our main sound editing software. I have no previous experience with editing sounds or with this particular software so I found it difficult to learn what to do.

To start, I connected the recorder to my computer and downloaded all the files from it. There was around 4 minutes of recording, around 2 minutes was unusable due to volume levels. I listened to all of it then opened it on Abode Audition and messed around with it for abit trying to learn the basic, I then opened it up on Multi Track and edited it to the best of my abilites. I eventually settled on someone hitting a door with a pen and it gave a faint thud but with some effects on top made a nice Sci Fi sound.

As you can see from my screenshot I am on MultiTrack, I have chosen roughly a 40 second clip. This will be looped over and over, I wanted to make it a little bit longer because if its just a 5 second clip looped over and over it will be quite annoying after a while and I don't want that for my game. I have also duplicated the track as you can see and staggered it so halfway through the first one the second one will start. This will give it a duplicate effect and sounds pretty good in my opinion.

I have also added quite a few filters on top of the sound to give it a Sci-Fi feel, which is perfect considering it will be going onto my Space Invaders game.

In this screenshot you can see the filters I have added in the bottom left, I have added two filters, one which is a pitch correction was when the two clips overlapped it sounded a little stunted like there was a jump. I have also added a standard FFT Filter, which is a Rack Effect. This gives it a Sci-Fi tone and it sounds really good and suited for my game. As you can see in the above screenshot I have also added in a Fade In and Fade Out so it isn't really loud when it first begins and subtly builds up onto full volume, it also fades in and out during the middle track so it isn't a big jump between. It fades out at the end too so it doesn't just burn out instantly it just fades away.

See a basic breakdown of the sound of my game, it's far from perfect but it's all I could do at the time:

Summary.

In conclusion, I think I achieved what I set out to do pretty well. I have stuck to my plan and my editing process well and I'm happy with the final product. The microphone given to me by the College was a big help and you can tell from the music that it is recorded to a professional standard. I always stuck to the editing idea I originally had and have continued to add Sci-Fi filters and made sure to choose Techno sounding beats.
